Hay in a Day

Hay in a Day

Hands-on farm activity at Conner Prairie—learn hay-making in a day.

Even though summer heat is in full swing, the hardworking residents of Prairietown are thinking ahead to winter and the work required to keep their animals fed through the cold months. This hands-on event invites families to pitch in and help prepare hay stores. You'll get to try traditional farm skills like scything, raking, and stacking while learning to identify different pasture plants and discovering why hay has been such a crucial resource—both in pioneer times and on farms today. If your family enjoys getting a little dirty and learning practical skills, this is a fun way to spend an afternoon. There's even a friendly hay-cutting competition at 2 p.m. if you want to test your abilities. Best of all, this program is included free with your general admission to Conner Prairie, so there's no extra cost beyond your regular visit.
