Cooking at the Hearth

Cooking at the Hearth

Cook a 19th-century meal over an open fire at Conner Prairie's historic house.

Step back in time at the William Conner House with this hands-on seven-hour workshop where you'll learn to cook as people did in the 1800s. Working over an open hearth with expert instructor Sarah Withrow, you'll prepare an entire meal using traditional techniques and period-inspired recipes. This isn't a quick demo—you'll be involved in every step of the process, from prep through serving, gaining real skills and understanding of historic foodways along the way. By the end of the day, you'll leave with a packet of recipes to recreate these cooking methods at home, even without your own hearth. This experience works well for teens and adults (ages 14+, with younger participants needing an adult companion). It's a great choice if your family enjoys history, cooking, or simply wants to try something different. Tickets are $125 for Conner Prairie members and $140 for nonmembers.
