Community Day

Free community event with the Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad—ride vintage trains and explore railroad history.

Join the Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad for their second annual Community Day celebration. This free event offers something for everyone in the family, including hands-on activities like touch-a-truck, local food vendors, and booths from community partners. You'll find entertainment throughout the day, plus educational stations where kids can learn about train safety. Historic train cars will be open for tours, giving visitors a glimpse into railroad history. The highlight for many families is the caboose ride—a scenic trip aboard the historic Monon caboose that crosses the White River and returns, departing from Forest Park. Caboose ride tickets are $5 per person and must be purchased in advance. If you're interested in a more exclusive experience, locomotive cab rides are available for adults 18 and older at $20 per ticket. With free admission to the community event itself, this is an affordable outing that combines learning, food, and outdoor fun.
