All About Oxen

Learn about oxen and historical farm life at this Conner Prairie program.

Your family will step back in time to explore the working lives of oxen on the American farm. Led by Conner Prairie's agriculture experts, this outdoor workshop brings history to life through hands-on learning. You'll discover how oxen were selected and trained as essential farm animals, learn the practical skills of harnessing and directing them, and get the chance to actually drive a team yourself. The animals you'll work with are heritage breeds—Randall Lineback or English Longhorn oxen—making this a truly authentic experience. This program runs rain or shine and is designed for teenagers and adults who want to understand traditional farming from the inside out. Participants should be at least 14 years old; younger teens need to bring an adult along. Whether your family loves animals, enjoys history, or wants to try something completely different, you'll leave with new skills and a real respect for these powerful, intelligent animals. Cost is $90 for Conner Prairie members and $100 for nonmembers.
